Variation

  • Define the terms genetic variation and acquired variation- Genetic variation, variation in alleles of genes, occurs both within and among populations. Genetic variation is important because it provides the “raw material” for natural selection. Genetic variation is brought about by mutation, a change in a chemical structure of a gene. Acquired- to come to have as a new or added characteristic, trait, or ability (as by sustained effort or natural selection)
  • Create a table that classifies characteristics as genetic or acquired.
  • Define the terms discrete variation and continuous variation.

Genetic & Acquired Variation

Definitions:

Genetic Variation: Ways that individuals differ from one another because of genetics or genes from their parents. eg. some one with blue eyes would have inherited it from their parents or grandparents.

Acquired/Environmental Variation: ways that individuals differ from one another because of where they live or who they live with eg. if you live in france with your french family, chances are you will speak french.

Continuous & Discrete Variation

Definitions:

Discrete Variation: Variation from person to person that has options or categories. eg. you can either have blue eyes or brown eyes.
  • Discrete Variation, differences in characteristics that have a particular form e.g Blood type


Continuous Variation: variation from person to person that has many possibilities and would usually be measured on a continuum or something similar. eg. someones height could be 1.72378m
