On this page I would like you to create notes relating to the following:
  • A diagram showing the parts of the atom

external image atom_labels.gifNOTE: the valence shell is only the outer shell

  • Information that identifies the charges of different parts of the atom (which parts are positive, etc).

The positive charges of the atom are the protons. These can be found in the nucleus of the atom
The neutral charges of the atom are the neutrons. These can also be found in the nucleus of the atom
The negative charges of the atom are the electrons and they can be found on the shells of the atom orbiting the nucleus.
You can only add and/or remove electrons, if you add electrons then the atom will be negatively charged and if you remove electrons, then the atom will be positively charged.
  • A step by step method of how to draw an atom using Ca as an example

  • An explanation of how the periodic table relates to the structure of an atom
The group shows us the valence electrons while the period tells us the amount of shells it has.
